3-Paycheck Months in 2027
By Paycheck Forecast · · 5 min read
If you're paid every other Friday, your 2027 three-paycheck months are either April and October, or January, July and December. Which one depends on which Friday you're paid. Other paydays of the week get different months, so there's a full table below. There's also a catch: if your rent or mortgage is due on the 1st, the third check in a month is often already spoken for.
Why some months get three paychecks
A biweekly schedule gives you 26 paychecks a year, not 24. Most months get two, and the two leftover checks land in whichever months happen to fit three paydays. That's any month where your first payday falls on the 1st, 2nd or 3rd. The 3rd only works in a 31-day month.
People paid twice a month (for example the 15th and the last day) never get a three-paycheck month. People paid weekly get five-paycheck months instead. In 2027 those are January, April, July, October and December for Friday paydays.
2027 three-paycheck months, by schedule
First, figure out which schedule you're on. Find a payday you've already had in October 2026 in the middle column.
| Paid every other… | If you were paid on these October 2026 dates | Your 3-paycheck months in 2027 |
|---|---|---|
| Friday | Oct 2, 16, 30 | April (2, 16, 30) and October (1, 15, 29) |
| Friday | Oct 9, 23 | January (1, 15, 29), July (2, 16, 30) and December (3, 17, 31)†. See the note on January 1 below |
| Thursday | Oct 1, 15, 29 | April (1, 15, 29) and September (2, 16, 30) |
| Thursday | Oct 8, 22 | July (1, 15, 29) and December (2, 16, 30) |
| Wednesday | Oct 14, 28 | March (3, 17, 31) and September (1, 15, 29) |
| Wednesday | Oct 7, 21 | June (2, 16, 30) and December (1, 15, 29) |
| Tuesday | Oct 13, 27 | March (2, 16, 30) and August (3, 17, 31) |
| Tuesday | Oct 6, 20 | June (1, 15, 29) and November (2, 16, 30) |
| Monday | Oct 12, 26 | March (1, 15, 29) and August (2, 16, 30) |
| Monday | Oct 5, 19 | May (3, 17, 31)‡ and November (1, 15, 29) |
† Friday, January 1, 2027 is New Year's Day, a bank holiday. Most employers move a holiday payday to the business day before, which would be Thursday, December 31, 2026. If yours does, that check counts toward 2026, and January 2027 becomes a normal two-paycheck month. December 31, 2027 is not a bank holiday, because the Federal Reserve stays open on the Friday before a Saturday holiday.
‡ Monday, May 31, 2027 is Memorial Day. A payday moved to Friday, May 28 still lands in May.
Holidays elsewhere in 2027 can shift a payday by a day or two, but none of them pushes a paycheck into a different month. If your employer uses a different holiday rule, check your pay calendar.
Is 2027 a 27-paycheck year?
On paper, yes, for one schedule. If you're paid every other Friday and one of those Fridays is January 1, 2027, there are 27 Fridays on that schedule in 2027. In practice, January 1 is a bank holiday, so most employers pay that check on December 31, 2026. That leaves 26 paychecks in calendar 2027.
If you're salaried, ask payroll how they handle this. Some employers split an annual salary over 27 checks in a 27-payday year, which makes each check a little smaller.
The catch: the third check often pays next month's rent
Here's the part most "3-paycheck month" guides skip. Say you're paid every other Friday on the April/October schedule:
- Paychecks: $1,500 take-home each
- Rent: $1,400, due on the 1st
| Payday | What it has to cover |
|---|---|
| Fri Apr 2 | April bills (rent was already paid) |
| Fri Apr 16 | April bills |
| Fri Apr 30 | May 1 rent |
| Fri May 14 | May bills |
| Fri May 28 | June 1 rent |
The April 30 check arrives one day before May's rent is due. May's own paychecks don't start until May 14. So the "extra" April check isn't extra: it's May's rent, arriving early. Spend it on something fun and you'll be short on May 1.
The check that is actually extra is the one that leaves money over after the next few weeks of bills are covered. The easiest way to find it is to lay out the next 60 to 90 days by paycheck, and see which check has room left once it has done its job.
Paycheck Forecast does exactly that, for free. You enter your balance, paydays and bills, and it shows what each paycheck has to cover and where your balance dips lowest. No sign-up, and your numbers stay in your browser.
What to do with a genuinely extra check
Once you've confirmed the third check isn't already committed:
- Top up your checking cushion. A buffer of even a few hundred dollars absorbs a late deposit or a surprise charge before it becomes an overdraft.
- Get a bill ahead by one cycle. Paying one bill a month early can permanently fix a tight week.
- Fund the irregular bills. Car registration, annual subscriptions, insurance premiums and holiday gifts are all predictable. Setting aside money for them now stops them wrecking a two-paycheck month later.
- Build or rebuild emergency savings. The CFPB's guide to emergency savings is a good starting point.
- Pay down high-interest debt. Extra money on a credit card balance saves interest every month after.
Frequently asked questions
Which months have 3 paychecks in 2027?
It depends on your payday. Every-other-Friday schedules get either April and October, or January, July and December. Other paydays of the week get different months. See the table above.
How do I know which biweekly schedule I'm on?
Find any payday you've had recently and count forward in two-week steps. The simplest way is to find an October 2026 payday in the table above.
Do you get 3 paychecks if you're paid twice a month?
No. A twice-a-month (semimonthly) schedule is always exactly two paychecks a month, 24 a year. Only every-two-weeks (biweekly) pay produces three-paycheck months.
Will I get 27 paychecks in 2027?
Almost certainly not. The only schedule with 27 paydays in 2027 starts on Friday, January 1, which is a bank holiday. Most employers pay that check on December 31, 2026 instead.
Should I budget around the third paycheck?
Budget around two paychecks a month, and treat the third as a bonus only after checking it isn't needed for the next month's early bills, especially rent due on the 1st.
